This study aimed to provide the Commission and the Member States with guidance on operational indicators in a domain where they have not been used before.

The study proposes an indicator for identifying high nature value farmland and forestry and traditional agricultural landscapes at Member State or regional level. It highlights the information required to allow authorities to recognise whether an area or farm/forest fits within the HNV category or not.

The indicator is intended to enable authorities to monitor the evolution the HNV area, thus contributing to the evaluation of rural development programmes.
