Chough – the story
From a nature conservation perspective one of the most important species found in Islay is the red-billed chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax).
Although its range extends from the Canary Isles, across Europe to Asia it has a very patchy distribution with its main stronghold in Europe in Spain and in some mountain areas of France and Italy. The population in Islay together with neighbouring Colonsay represents the north-westerly edge of its European range.
