The study aimed to identify the environmental effects of olive farming in the EU. A broad classification of olive production systems was produced. Recommendations were developed for improving environmental integration in the CAP olive regime.

As part of this study, the Forum developed a typology which essentially differentiates systems according to the way in which farmland is managed combining economic/technical classification criteria, bio-geographical region and forage and fodder resources. Using these three dimensions, all dairy farm in the EU were allocated to one of ten broad dairy systems by reference to threshold values of some key indicators such as fertiliser use, concentrate use, farm size, herd size, milk yield, livestock density and main winter fodder used.
